Some Goals For the New Year

I actually accomplished most of my 2025 goals, although I definitely did not lose any weight (but didn’t gain any either). Neither Brett nor I bought any new clothes during the year but gave each other one wanted piece at Christmas. We did not set foot in Target, Home Depot, or Walmart, or use Amazon for the entire year and saved a lot. WenYu had a beautiful, fun wedding in September with our whole family together, and we had a nice trip up to Massachusetts and back, including a national park visit along the way (and a t-shirt for Brett, of course). We downsized some more even though we didn’t think we had anything left to get rid of.

I wouldn’t be me though if I didn’t have some goals to accomplish in the coming year. I came up with a short list of just five goals:

  1. Get the heck out of Tennessee. Our lease expires over Labor Day weekend, and the day after that holiday we are out. of. here. Tennessee is an extremely beautiful state, but has a dark undercurrent that we will be glad to be away from. It hasn’t turned out to be all that affordable either.
  2. Prepare for a big move. We haven’t decided yet whether we’ll go full service or do the packing ourselves.
  3. Embrace our new location. We are confident we will find the right place for us and truly make it home.
  4. Spend less time on the computer and more time reading. A genuine challenge, but I’m trying.
  5. Stay healthy. Keep up with medical appointments, watch what and how much I eat, and get some exercise every day!

I decided not to set any sort of reading goal this year, and am not going to even keep a list of the books I read. I want to keep my reading enjoyable and relaxing rather than try to finish a race. I’m pretty sure there will be lots of mysteries/thrillers, which are my favorite genre. I’m hoping to reread the entire Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny – we’ll see how that goes.

Here’s to looking forward, staying positive, and making this a great year for change!

Congrats on reaching your goals! I totally agree reading should relaxing and enjoyable, not trying to meet some requirement. I briefly belonged to a bookclub, but realized I resented “having” to read the chosen book, when I really had no interest in it. Life’s too short; read for your own pleasure.

I really got carried away with my goals last year and ended up making myself miserable. Reading so many books was a part of that so I’m taking a more relaxed approach this year. So far, so good.

I have tried bookclubs, but didn’t enjoy the experience. Maybe third time is a charm though although having an assigned book with a deadline is a bit of a turn-off. I had enough of that in grad school to last a lifetime.

I laughed out loud when I read “get the heck out of Tennessee.” I have lived in places that gave me that feeling after a while. On to the next adventure!

Also trying to read more and scroll less, but as you know, it’s tough. Books help. Dogs are a great distraction. And DH and I have re-engaged in Gin Rummy which he had to give up before his hand surgery. (He claims that’s why he lost more in the past, but so far, the rebuilt thumb joint hasn’t given him the oomph he needs. LOL)

My honest feelings about TN require much stronger language, but this is a family-approved blog. I just hope we’re able to leave when the time comes but with what’s currently going on, who knows? I’ve seen a lots of advice that if you want to leave, leave now, which we can’t.

I’m still on my phone too much but am reading more and finding other things to do as well so it’s not as bad as it could be.

Like the new blog, Laura! In Massachusetts we met a lady from Nashville and mentioned to her where Brett lived. She became very animated telling us how expensive the cost of living is where you are. Glad you all will be resuming your life elsewhere. Onward!

Hi Linda! We are in living in one of the higher-priced areas of TN, but also the area with the best schools for the grands. It’s the trade off with having no state income tax – they hit you every place else. We’re still trying to figure out where to go next – every place seems to have an equal or higher cost of living than here so there’s no “perfect” choice. We need to see how things go in the U.S.in the few months – right now it’s scary.

We also live in a no-state-income-tax state, as advised by our California tax preparer after Erik’s second retirement in 2003. Living in a small house helps. Getting a reverse mortgage helps. Having good neighbors helps. While we are not always happy with town planners and developers here, we are grateful for a library, good grocery shopping, a hospital and an abundance of healthcare services. There is no perfect choice, but I am confident you will find a place to thrive.

We just have to figure out what are the things we really want around us. Hawaii gave us a solid foundation on how to live in a high cost of living area and thrive – we have a feeling we’re going to be needing those skills again.

It’s so nice to read your blog again. I predict the weeks will quickly pass and soon you will be off to your new adventure. I am planning on reading more this year, but without a firm goal. The goal is enjoy. Peace be with you.

Things do seems to be moving along quickly time wise, but with the current unrest and uncertainly in the country now we’re feeling very unsettled. The future is truly a great unknown right now.

I cannot believe the time to leave Tennessee is coming up this year! I cannot wait to see where you settle next, it will be hopefully just right. I am reading a book a month with my book club, that is a good amount for me! I have read MANY of the Gamache books, and I adore him. Enjoy!

Only about seven and half months to go! January seems to be barely creeping by, but then again, it always seems like it does, every year.

At the pace I’m going now I’ll be reading around 1 1/2 books per month, and that’s find with me for now. I have been greatly enjoying rereading the Gamache books and getting to know the characters again. And, it’s been long enough that I can’t remember when I start who the killer is (but I figure it out before the book ends).
